Walter Van Beirendonck

Walter Van Beirendonck, born in 1957 near Antwerp, is a founding member of the Antwerp Six known for his provocative, playful, and politically charged designs. Graduating from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, he debuted his first collection, Sado (1982), exploring BDSM and fetish-inspired motifs, establishing his reputation for bold, eclectic work.

Through his main line and diffusion labels like Walter Worldwide and W.&L.T., Van Beirendonck created a universe of colorful characters and narratives, spreading anti-racist, sex-positive, and anti-conformist messages. As head of Antwerp Academy’s fashion department (2007–2022), he mentored generations of designers, shaping Belgian fashion’s future while remaining an enduring icon of creativity, rebellion, and queer expression.
