Carol Christian Poell Autumn-Winter 1996/97 'Dermatographism' Shirt
A haunting relic from Carol Christian Poell’s Autumn-Winter 1996/97 “Dermatographism” collection, this sheer, flesh-toned button-down is highly translucent, reminiscent of a second skin. Constructed from ultra-light polyester, the fabric clings like a sheer veil, evoking the uncanny sensation of wearing a synthetic epidermis. The color hovers between bruised peach and sickly orange, visually suggesting muscle, fat, and skin stretched thin.
This piece exemplifies Poell’s material language, a concept central to the “Dermatographism” collection. In the same season he used nylon to simulate scratched skin, mismatched adhesives, and plastic-based abrasion textures, Poell also introduced nontraditional materials into high fashion: bubble wrap jackets that pop, denim wrapped in plastic film, PVC-thread coats, and pig intestine pullovers. The shirt offered here speaks directly to this unsettling lexicon: a delicate yet disconcerting garment that blends fragility, transparency, and tension.
