Martin Margiela

Founded in Paris in 1988 by Martin Margiela and Jenny Meirens, Maison Martin Margiela quickly became a radical force in fashion. Known for his reclusive nature, Margiela developed a signature aesthetic defined by deconstruction, repurposed vintage garments, and conceptual presentation, transforming showrooms, runways, and packaging into artistic statements.

Margiela’s work consistently challenged the form and function of clothing, turning pre-existing materials into inventive, sculptural pieces—such as bustiers from men’s collars or fur coats composed of different pelts. With his artisanal lines and experimental approach, he redefined the possibilities of fashion, leaving a lasting influence on contemporary design. Though he departed the maison in 2008, Margiela’s vision of anonymity, reinvention, and boundary-pushing creativity remains a benchmark for designers worldwide.
